Ken Smith

About Ken:

I grew up in Petersburg, VA, where I attended a small private school, which is where I found my love for soccer and tennis. I played for school and recreationally. I still try to find time to play and watch as much as possible. I moved to Durham, NC in 1987 to attend North Carolina Central University, where I graduated with Honors with a degree in Mathematics. After college I moved to Florida, where I lived and worked for 23 years in hospitality, insurance and the mortgage industry. I became a Correspondent lender in 2003. Primarily working as a loan officer and branch manager, I have originated almost every type of loan, ranging from Reverse to FHA 203-K, USDA, VA, FHA as well as others. I met my wife and love, Julie, in Florida on the beautiful Island of Sanibel. We were married in 1997, which is when I met Jay Garvens at our wedding. Julie and Jay were childhood neighbors and had remained friends. We have two children, Piper & KC, who attend Vista Ridge High School here in the Springs, along with two dogs, Sunny (yellow lab) and Bella (cocker spaniel), who absolutely love the climate here. I joined Garvens Mortgage Group in April 2013, after an 18 year friendship with Jay personally and some business. When the opportunity arose, Julie and I were delighted with the idea that our children could also grow up together. As a team member here at Garvens Group of Churchill Mortgage, I call myself a “1-off” as I have no military service. However, I was able to live a military life vicariously through my younger brother, Landon, who started on nuclear subs, was later a commissioned officer and retired after a 25 year career. There is no greater pleasure than serving those who serve, have served and stand on guard for our country.
